Symbol Map
Find a mark. Keep its meaning in context.
Browse a curated symbol map with character names, code points, category filters, and copy controls. Explore form before assigning meaning.
The working reference
A small library. Plenty to explore.
48 selected text symbols, organized by form. Character names identify the text; they do not prescribe a universal meaning.
48 symbols shown · All categories
Copying preserves the character, not this font or color. Without JavaScript, select the visible character and use your device’s Copy command.
Start with the character, not an assumption
This starter library groups text symbols by visible form and practical browsing categories. A code point identifies a character; it does not establish every interpretation of a similar-looking drawing. Use the name and code together, then follow a topic guide when your question is about cultural context or a design application.
Build a map around a question
For a design project, group marks by the task they need to perform. For research, keep the source, period, and attributed interpretation with each entry. A visual resemblance is a useful observation, but it is not evidence of a shared origin. Read the visual-taxonomy guide for a record structure you can adapt.
Copy with the destination in mind
The copy controls copy text, not an image or a licensed illustration. Check the destination font and keep a plain-language label wherever the symbol carries important information. When clipboard access is blocked by your browser, select the visible character and use your usual copy command. The complete collection remains readable without JavaScript.
Common questions
A little more context.
Is this a map of every symbol?
No. This is a selected starter library and a set of topic guides. It is not an exhaustive character database or a universal dictionary of meanings.
Why can a symbol look different after copying?
A character’s appearance depends on the font and rendering environment. Preserve the code point and test the text in the actual destination.
Where should I start for symbol meanings?
Choose a subject in the Symbols Map directory. Cultural and historical interpretations need a specific source and context, not only a matching outline.
